Dr. Unal graduated from Hacettepe University in 2004 with a BS in Economics, ranking second in the graduating class. He earned an MSc degree in Economics from Middle East Technical University (METU) in 2006, an MA degree in Economics from Florida International University (FIU) in 2009 and a Ph.D. in Economics from Florida International University in 2012. His dissertation is sponsored by FIU's Dissertation Year Fellowship given to Ph.D. students who have made excellent progress in writing their doctoral dissertations.
His research interests lie within the broad field of open economy macroeconomics, primarily in macroeconomics and monetary economics, and particularly in fiscal policy. He presented his work at several conferences and seminars in the United States and Turkey. Dr. Unal's papers have appeared in well-known international journals such as Kyklos, Romanian Journal of Economic Forecasting, and The Empirical Economics Letters.
Dr. Unal worked as a Research Assistant from 2005 to 2007 at METU, as a Teaching Assistant from 2008 to 2009, and as a lecturer from 2010 to 2011 at FIU. He joined the Statistical, Economic and Social Research and Training Centre for Islamic Countries (SESRIC), which is a subsidiary organ of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) -the second largest inter-governmental organization after the United Nations- and worked as a Researcher between June, 2012 and January, 2014. Then, he served as a faculty member in the Department of Economics between February 2014 and July 2016 at Turgut Ozal University. Dr. Unal is now working as a part-time faculty in the department of economics at METU.
